The Hidden Message: Practice Task!

Image
A Pre-shoot Practice:  Click here to watch The Hidden Message! Me and my Team members gathered to practice our learned shots in a project we were assigned. That included a hidden message so we executed this little film opening together! STORYLINE: The rain softly drizzles in the background as a girl sits on the roof, writing in her notebook. Suddenly, a loud clap of thunder catches her attention, prompting her to stand up and pack her belongings. She walks into the rain, enjoying the gentle drops that sprinkle down on her. Feeling happy and giddy, she decides to take a few pictures of the stunning scene in front of her, so she heads towards the guard shelter.  As she angles her camera and adjusts her position, she frowns when something in the grill obstructs her view. She notices a crumpled note shoved into the grill. Reaching for the note, she opens it and reads something she absolutely did not expect!

Sounds in Filmmaking~

Image
Micro-Elements of Sound: A surround sound system utilizes speakers placed at various locations to create immersive cinematic sound effects. Diegetic Sounds:  Derived from the term “diegesis,” diegetic sounds are those that originate from the film's world. Non-Diegetic Sound:  These are added sounds or sound effects that are not part of the film's world.   Internal Diegetic Sound: Thoughts expressed aloud by a character or the mind's internal monologue.   Synchronous Sound: Sounds that sync with on-screen actions, such as the screeching of brakes during a car accident. Non-Synchronous Sound: Sounds that provide context but do not match the visible actions on screen. For example, police sirens heard while a character is hiding. Sound Motif:  A specific sound associated with a particular scene or character. For instance, the Pink Panther theme plays whenever the character appears. Sound Bridge:   A technique where sounds from one scene transition into a...

Cinematic Composition?

Image
8 Steps to Cinematography! 1. Apply the Rule of Thirds:      - Position subjects on focal points.    - Place authoritative subjects in the center.    - For landscapes or horizons, align them with two horizontal lines.    2. Depth:     - Shoot from a lower angle for a more amateur feel.   -  Use blur to add depth and eliminate distractions from the background.   - Pull the subject away from the background to enhance depth.   - Incorporate elements in the foreground, such as leaves or flowers.     3.  Leading Lines:        - Use leading lines to draw attention to the subject.   - They guide both the viewer and the character’s direction.   - If the leading lines disappear, the audience may feel lost, just as the character does.   4.  Symmetry:      - Audiences appreciate order and balance...

Camera Movements:

Image
Let's explore Camera Movements! The Static Shot: It is a plain shot with no camera movement. A Pan: horizontal movement which is either left or right... A slow Pan can build anticipation and rapid pans or whip pans can heighten energy and show relation or synergy between two characters. Tilt is a vertical movement that is either up or down it can reveal the character in the setting and show dominance, vulnerability, or scale.  Push-in: An inverted camera movement to direct attention to a specific detail and pull-out is an outward camera movement that detaches us from the scene or film. It can show abandonment and helplessness or unveil something. The Zoom: Movement can go in or out unnaturally. This also unveils something building intensity or can scare you or draw attention towards you. Crush Zoom has dramatic scenes or effects shown with the fast zoom and Dolly Zoom uses a Dolly movement and lens zoom to create a vertical effect. Either it's Dolly in zoom out or Dolly out a...

HOW TO BEGIN FILMS~

Image
WHAT EXACTLY IS A FILM OPENING? Beginning a film~ A film opening is the initial sequence of scenes that appear at the beginning of a movie or film. It has plenty of key functions in the narrative and filmmaking that include: Setting/Tone/Mood :   The opening sequence establishes the overall mood of the film. It sets the vibe for the audience whether it's suspenseful, romantic, comedic, or dramatic etc.       2. Introducing key Elements: This involves introducing characters, setting, time period, and other important aspects of the story that are included in the structure and are apart of the narrative. These are crucial for the audience so they understand the film.       3. Setting up a central theme: Filmmakers often use the opening as a hint or practically set up themes or visual motifs that will be explored throughout the film. This gives the audience a perspective and they begin to expect and observe.       4. Catchin...

Camera Perspective & Angles~

Image
How To Angle Your Lens! Rule of thirds: > Design principle applied when composing an image >used to draw the viewer's eye to a point of interest even when a lot is happening in the image.  > Uses a grid structure & divides the image into 9 parts. > The point where vertical & horizontal lines meet is where your focal points should be... there are various angles to use while we film, so let's dig into camera angles! Low Angle shots: Any shot below a subject's eye-line Looking up at them. Perfect for heroes &, villains to show power and hold in the scene. (low angle shot) High Angle shots:   Any shot from a height or above the subject portraying the subject low. it shows inferiority, confusion, weakness, or defeat. (high-angle shot) Aerial shot:  an extreme version of a High-Angle Shot on a large and wide scale. used as an establishing shot usually. for example: establishing an environment from planes, cities, and landscapes. <<aerial sho...
